About Diving at Coco Plum
Experience spectacular diving in the largest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemisphere. Belize is home to the second largest Barrier Reef in the world, and to three of the four atolls in the Caribbean. Belize's magnificent Barrier Reef is over 170 miles long, stretching from north to south and running nearly parallel to the coast. Over 400 species of fish, at least 70 types of hard coral, and a variety of large sponges and gorgonians are found in the waters of Belize. Visualize diving the sheer walls, pinnacles, swim-through's, spur and groove, deep canyons and caves. Experience all of this without the heavy crowds found in many other Caribbean diving destinations. Divers can explore the pristine, unspoiled underwater environment of Belize's Barrier Reef to their heart's content.

Coco Plum Dive Sites
SOUTHERN BARRIER REEF
Coco Plum Island Resort's dive sites include areas along the Southern Barrier Reef,
from slightly north of Tobacco Cay to south of South Water Cay, including the
South Water Cay Marine Reserve. This Barrier Reef is a quick 10-minute boat ride
from Coco Plum. Most of the dives in this area are drift wall dives interspersed
with sand channels where you may spot southern stingrays, spotted eagle rays, moray
eels, sea turtles, barracuda, grouper, dolphins, and a wide variety of smaller
tropical fish.
There is a wide selection of dive sites in this area of the Barrier Reef to choose
from. Dives include The Abyss, Black Beauty, Carrie Bow Ridges, Hell Hole, Little
Blue Hole, Paradise Reef, South Water Wall, and Trick Ridge.
WHALE SHARK DIVES
During full moons in the months of April, May and June, you can dive in the Silk Cay
Marine Reserve to view whale sharks. During these full moons, dog snapper come to
this area of the reef to spawn. Whale sharks follow to feed upon the spawn. The
docile, gentle whale shark is the largest of all fish and can weigh up to 15 tons
and be up to 45 feet in length. As many as four to five whale sharks can be seen
on a dive and this experience should not be missed by divers visiting Belize during
these full moons. These dives will require special arrangements and additional
costs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the water temperature?
The waters of Belize are temperate and clear, making it ideal for divers and
snorkel ers. Temperatures range from 77-78 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter
months (November through March)to 83-84 degrees during the summer (April through October). We recommend full 3mm wetsuits during the winter months.
What is typical visibility?
The visibility of Belize's waters usually ranges from 60-100 feet. Visibility can
be around 60 feet due to changes in weather and water temperature but usually does
not fall below this.
Are the currents strong?
The currents along Belize's Barrier Reef are usually slight and most wall dives are
drift dives going with the current. Divers may experience slight increases in
currents during the dives.
Are dive trips ever cancelled?
We try our best to serve our divers bearing in mind safety. Waters can at times
get choppy, especially outside the reef. If the waters are too rough we may be
forced to cancel or postpone dive, snorkeling, and fishing trips.
Should I bring my own dive equipment?
Yes, since Coco Plum is a small, intimate resort we do ask that divers bring
their own dive equipment, including BC and regulator, mask, snorkel, and fins,
as well as wet suit, and dive watch. You can rent equipment for $25 per day if you do not want to bring your own. We do provide weights and weight belts at no addtional charge.
What else should I bring on dive trips?
It is recommended that divers also bring along a lightweight, waterproof jacket,
sunscreen, sunglasses, hat or cap, and camera. We will provide a brown bag lunch
and fluids.
Can I dive alone?
No, all of our dives must be done with a dive master and with another guest. We do not allow single dives.
