About Coco Plum Island Resort

About Coco Plum Island Resort

What once was part of a long island range, Coco Plum Island Resort is one of the first "cays" off the coast of Dangriga Town. In 1961, this protective island range was split into three smaller individual cays by Hurricane Hattie. The middle portion, surrounded by shallow sandbars and crystal clear waters, would later become the magical getaway that is Coco Plum Island Resort.

After many years of development, Coco Plum Island Resort was officially established in 2000. Originally starting small with three brightly colored ocean-front cabanas set on the white pristine beaches, Coco Plum slowly but surely grew over the years. Initially the wonderful local staff was comprised of just a few folks. The island manager and cook were one in the same, the captain was also the fishing guide, the dive guide took care of the grounds. The bar, dining room, kitchen and game room were all under the same thatch roof structure at the northern tip of the island.

Currently there are 18 ocean-front cabanas on the island. We also have a luxurious 3-bedroom, 3-bath over the water villa which is ideal for several couples travelling together. We are one of the only adults-only private island resorts in Belize. We continue to be 100% locally owned, managed and staffed. In conjunction with our sister resorts, Belizean Dreams Resort and Laru Beya Resort, we employ over a 100 people full-time, therefore contributing greatly to the local economies of Dangriga, Hopkins and the surrounding villages. We take this commitment to the residents of the area very seriously. Providing excellent, personalized customer service and always listening to the feedback of our guests, continues to be our focus.

A Labor of Love

A Labor of Love

Coco Plum Island Resort originated as the dream of two young lovebirds, Michelle & Emilio, back in 2000. Emilio, born and raised in Belize, met Michelle in New Orleans while studying in the US. In fact, they met at a Mardi Gras parade! Emilio had spent most of his youth frolicking in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Weekends were spent at the cays, small islands peppered in crystal clear azure blue waters along the coast of Belize. He enjoyed fishing, free diving, snorkeling, canoeing and horsing around with family and friends. Back then, they slept in hammocks on the veranda of their bare-bones camp. They brought back the fresh catch of the day for their mothers to cook fresh, along with journey cakes baked over an open hearth using kerosene lanterns to provide light.

Michelle, born on Mardi Gras day and raised in the Deep South, grew up with a strong sense of Southern hospitality, generosity of spirit and an innate ability to "pass a good time," as the saying goes in New Orleans. Weekends were filled with crawfish boils, crabbing trips, family picnics and for one glorious month yearly, carnival parades. As a child she was drawn to the water, enjoying nothing more than going for a swim any chance she could get. She loved to travel during annual summertime family vacations and was most concerned about whether or not hotel accommodations included a swimming pool. When stuck indoors due to recurring New Orleans heatwaves, her favorite activity was getting lost in a books about travel and adventure.

The seeds for the couple’s dream of owning and managing a resort were firmly planted when Emilio and Michelle married, returned to Belize and together managed Manta Resort, the premier dive resort in Belize at the time, both fresh out of college. It was there the couple gained considerable experience managing all aspects of a small, intimate resort. Michelle trained to become a certified dive instructor for the resort. They became hooked on island life and were determined to own and operate a private island resort providing genuine Belizean service. But never in their wildest dreams did they imagine that they would be fortunate enough to see their vision grow into the special gem that Coco Plum Island has become. They are honored to share with others the same freedom, sense of adventure, peace and romance that Emilio experienced as a child along with the warmth and hospitality that permeated Michelle’s childhood in the Deep South.

Unplug, unwind, and reconnect. We invite you to enjoy the simplicity of island life as you are surrounded by nature’s beauty. We hope that you will discover the magic of Coco Plum Island—and we hope that you will return to see us again & again. Remember, you are only a stranger until you arrive!
