Belize Private Island
I spent most of my time in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea growing up in the sleepy coastal town of Dangriga in Belize. Week-ends were spent at the cays, small islands surrounded by the crystal clear azure blue waters of the Caribbean, fishing, free diving, snorkeling, canoeing and horsing around with family and friends. Back then, we slept in hammocks on the veranda of our bare-as-bones camp. We brought back the fresh catch of the day for our mothers to cook fresh along with journey cakes baked over an open hearth using kerosene lanterns to provide light. Those were the days. Never did I imagine in my wildest dreams that I would be fortunate enough to own and develop a private-island resort, allowing others to enjoy the same freedom, sense of adventure, peace and romance I experienced as a child.
The seeds for this dream were firmly planted when I was hired to manage Manta Resort, the premier dive resort in Belize at the time, fresh out of college. It was here I gained considerable experience managing all aspects of a small, intimate resort. I became hooked once again on island life and was determined to own and operate a private island resort providing excellent, personalized customer service of my own.
Thus Coco Plum Island Resort was born 17 years ago. We started small with three colorful ocean-front cabanas set on the white pristine beach of the island. Initially our wonderful local staff was small. The island manager and cook were one in the same, the captain was also the fishing guide, dive guide and took care of the grounds. The bar, dining room, kitchen and game room were all under the same thatch at the northern tip of the island.
Currently we have 18 ocean-front cabanas. We also have a luxurious 3-bedroom, 3-bath villa over the water which is ideal for several couples travelling together. We are one of the only adults-only private island resort in Belize. We continue to be 100% locally owned, managed and staffed. Indirectly, in junction with our sister resort, Belizean Dreams Resort, we employ over a 100 people full-time therefore contributing greatly to the sleepy towns of Dangriga, Hopkins and surrounding villages. We take this commitment to the residents of the area very seriously. Providing excellent, personalized customer service, always listening to the feedback of our guests, continues to be our focus.
